Mercy Relief Responds: Bangladesh Floods 2024 Relief Aid

Mercy Relief Responds: Bangladesh Floods 2024 Relief Aid

In response to the devastating flooding sweeping Bangladesh, Mercy Relief arrived on the ground in Bangladesh, on September 9, to initiate its relief aid distributions to an estimated 3,000 households. The aid comprised food and sanitation items that would reach some 18,000 individuals severely affected by the floods.

Mercy Relief's Executive Director Muhammad Ashik and Mr. Lecarl Lim from its International Programmes department formed a team of 16-strong with their ground partner, HEED Bangladesh. Together, they worked to extend help to the communities in the south-east district of Noakhali – one of 11 districts in the nation hard-hit by the massive flash floods since August 22.

Mercy Relief's relief mission came as more than 5.8 million people are estimated to have been affected by the floods, with more than 70 casualties and half a million people seeking refuge in temporary shelters. Poor drainage and continued monsoon rain in Bangladesh have caused floodwaters to recede very slowly. This has disrupted water and sanitation infrastructure and destroyed the livelihoods of rural communities.

Executive Director Muhammad Ashik carries out an assessment to ascertain further needs on the ground, to be addressed in Mercy Relief missions.

In addition to Mercy Relief's rapid disaster-response to the evolving situation in Bangladesh, it is also monitoring these communities' long-term recovery, such as in terms of recouping livelihoods, repairing shelters, wells and sanitation facilities, and delivering medical treatment – efforts that will be vital in the days to come.

To rise to these challenges, Mercy Relief has launched its fundraising campaign, the 'Bangladesh Floods 2024 Relief Aid Fund'. We seek the support of our generous donors to join us as we continue to respond to the situation in Bangladesh and extend our help to flood survivors and families left vulnerable to its dire conditions.

We believe that many Singaporeans resonate strongly with the cause to aid those affected by the floods in Bangladesh. Together, we can embody the kampong spirit of showing solidarity and compassion, to uplift those in need.
