On December 2, 2023, a magnitude 7.6 earthquake occurred off the island of Mindanao in the Philippines. In Hinatuan, the closest town to the epicenter, 142 houses collapsed, 852 others were damaged and power outages occurred. The town's mayor said 11,000 families, equivalent to 41,000 people were affected, with mud contamination forcing some residents to boil water.

Mercy Relief was the first humanitarian organisation to respond to earthquake victims in Surigao Del Sur, Philippines. Working in collaboration with local partners Masipag Mindanao and MISFI through CDRC, our team distributed food items, cooking oil, hygiene kits to over 1,500 people in Bislig, Hinatuan and Marihatag.
